LIGA Week 7 Team Of The Week Chaps Society

Summary of the action from Week 7 of NTU's LIGA 11-a-side competition. The LIGA Cup begins.

Week 7 of the LIGA saw the last round of fixtures taking place before the four week Christmas break. This round of fixtures also saw the start of the revamped NTU LIGA Cup competition with all 21 teams competing across seven groups, with each featuring a team from each of the three LIGA's.

Week 7 was the date scheduled for teams from LIGA's B and C to play each other. However, the Christmas break took it's toll on the fixtures as four of the seven LIGA C teams, namely Ajaxonometric, Expected Toulouse, Meridian Court and Red Stripe Belgrade were all unable to field teams due to player unavailability. The result of this was that Bayer Lexerkusen (Group A), Puyol Pants Down (Group B), Goldsmiths FC (Group E) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Skrtels (Group F) were all able to take 3-0 wins and the top spots in their respective groups.

The fixture list was bolstered by the addition of two rearranged LIGA games, with Goldsmiths FC playing Bayer Lexerkusen in LIGA B and the much awaited first BSOC derby of the year between the All Stars and the Bulldogz in LIGA A.

The first of the LIGA Cup games to be played took place in Group C between the tops sides LIGA's B & C, Chaps Society and Chamakh My Pitch Up. Both teams have been free scoring in their league's so far this year, but Chaps were able to maintain their 100% record so far this year, picking up a fine 9-2 to take top spot in Group C.

In Group D Cypriot Society, who have scored and conceded in ample amounts all season, played Blenheim FC, who have the opposite record, boasting one of the tightest defences across all three leagues, but also one of the lowest scoring attacks. One record had to give and unfortunately for the Blenheim boys it was their own as Cypriot Society go their Cup campaign started with a 6-2 victory.

So far LIGA B teams had tken three points in all of the Group games, either with convincing wins or walkovers. However, Group G bucked this trend as FC Banterlona played Pub Sports. The game was closely matched throughout, with Banterlona taking the lead twice, mid way through each half. Despite a late barrage of pressure from Pub Sports, including a last gasp corner, Banterlona were able to hang on to take a 2-1 win and pick up LIGA C's first win in the Cup.

In the hastily rearranged LIGA B game between Bayer Lexerkusen and Goldsmiths, the LIGA experience of Lex showed as they picked up a 6-0 win to move up to second in LIGA B, just three points behind Chaps Society. However, the 6-0 scoreline didn't do justice to Goldsmiths who could easily have reduced the deficit multiple times throughout the game and put in a fine showing in only their second active week as a team.

The first BSOC derby of the year produced the competitiveness that the fixture as become known for. Last season both teams picked up a victory each, with the All Stars winning 3-1 in the league, but the Bulldogz triumphing 2-0 in the LIGA Plate Final. The league form from last year was replicated in their first meeting this season as the All Stars won 2-1 to move above the Bulldogz into third place in LIGA A.

Week 7's Team Of The Week award was one of the most closely contested so after this season due to the standard of results. However, the award ultimately goes to Chaps Society for their 9-2 win over LIGA C leaders Chamakh My Pitch Up.

Week 8 of the LIGA takes place on 8th January and features purely LIGA Cup games as the LIGA A teams enter the fray against those from LIGA C.
