LIGA Week 10 Team Of The Week Puyol Pants Down

Summary of the action from Week 10 in the LIGA 11-a-side competitions.

Week 10 saw a slight return to normal ways, with five of the nine scheduled games taking place on the day. The continued closure of Clifton Playing Fields saw the LIGA C games involving FC Banterlona, Blenheim, Expected Toulouse and Ajaxonometric postponed, along with the LIGA Cup Group C game between FC Futsal and Chamakh My Pitch Up. Additionally Goldsmiths withdrew late on from their game at Victoria Embankment against Kings Of Leon Osman in Group E, handing KOLO top placing in the group, with Goldsmiths having to settle for second.

The five games that did go ahead at Victoria Embankment all came from the LIGA Cup and pitted LIGA A against LIGA B. In Group A BSOC Bulldogz played Bayer Lexerkusen for the first time since November 2012. In a game that was started scrappily by both sides BSOC gradually gained the upper hand, aided big performances from their goalkeeper and the centre of their defence. The final score of 3-0 to the Bulldogz clinched them 1st place in the group and qualify for the Cup quarter finals with Lex having to settle for the runner up spot and a place in the Plate draw.

Group B produced the one of the upset results of the day as Puyol Pants Down fought out a gritty 3-2 win over their LIGA A opponents Bassetts All Sorts, with a hat-trick by centre forward Shane Fahy proving the difference between the sides. As with the Group A game, Puyols win gifted them a place in the Cup draw and saw Bassetts go into the Plate.

Group D produced the second upset result of Week 10 as BSOC All Stars met Cypriot Society. Though the final group placings could not be resolved, due to All Stars still having to play Blenheim FC, Cypriot Society knew that a win would secure them in top spot, leaving the All Stars-Blenheim game as a play off for qualification into the Plate, whilst defeat would leave their fate in the hands of the other two sides. Cypriot Society have garnered a reputation for scoring and conceding goals and this game lived up to the reputation but in their favour as they beat All Stars 4-2.

Group F was a much more clear cut scenario as ACS and Teenage Mutant Ninja Skrtels faced each other to decide which qualified for the Cup or Plate. The odds seemed heavily stacked against TMNS given both ACS's reputation and performances so far this year, having scored twenty-five and conceded just six their four league games so far this year. However, TMNS have always shown themselves to be a tenacious side and defied expectations to narrowly trail 2-1 going into the last twenty-five minutes of the game, having earlier equalised through a thunderous strike by captain Nick Davis. In the last period of the game though ACS gained the upper hand, eventually winning 5-1, though the final score did not do justice to the efforts or performance of Skrtels on the day.

The final game of the day placed History Society against Pub Sports in Group G in a game, whilst being unable to ultimately decide any of the qualification spots in the group, had a big impact on the fates of each of it's participants. History Society took an early, but the ever improving Pub Sports struck back to lead 2-1 on the half hour. The rest of the game went with league standing though as LIGA A History ran out eventual 5-2 winners to consign Pub Sports to bottom in the Group and setup and Cup/Plate qualification match with FC Banterlona.

Week 10's Team Of The Week Award goes to Puyol Pants Down for their 3-2 upset victory over LIGA A's Bassett's All Sorts.

With the results from Week 10 resolving all but four of the final qualification places in the Cup and Plate the draw for each has now taken place.

In the LIGA Cup Puyol Pants Down face LIGA A's Kings Of Leon Osman, ACS FC will play the winners of History Society and FC Banterlona, BSOC Bulldogz meet LIGA B leaders Chaps Society whilst Cypriot Society are the lucky recipients of a Bye into the Semi Finals.

The draw for the Plate is less clear cut, with three qualification spots still up for grabs. Goldsmiths FC will play the winners of FC Futsal vs Chamakh My Pitch Up, whilst the winner of BSOC All Stars against Blenheim will meet Teenage Mutant Ninja Skrtels. Bassetts All Sorts will play the loser of the History vs Banterlona game, leaving Bayer Lexerkusen the only side knowing their fate as they pick up the Bye to the Semi-Finals.

Week 11 should hopefully see the return of a full fixture list with only Lex and Bassetts not having fixtures scheduled for the week.
