Lawley hails ‘ruthless’ City
Mel Lawley played a key role as City progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League with a thrilling 5-3 victory over Linkoping.
The winger created three assists – setting up two for Georgia Stanway and one for Jen Beattie – as the Blues stormed to a 4-0 half-time lead, before the hosts produced a spirited second half fight-back to reduce the deficit.
The triumph in Sweden ensured Nick Cushing’s side reached the last four of the competition with a remarkable 7-3 aggregate win, whilst continuing City’s impressive unbeaten record on foreign soil, and the midfielder expressed her delight.
“I’m happy but even happier for the team,” she told ManCity.com. “We won the first leg 2-0 and then we put in a good performance in the first-half.
“We knew we wanted to score the first goal and we had that in our mindset. We were direct and we were ruthless.“
Lawley was also pleased with the way her side responded to conceding, as Marija Banusic and Tova Almqvist struck in the second period.
“It was disappointing to concede three goals,” she admitted, “but we stuck together and got another goal back which was a bonus.”
Reflecting on her own display, which earned her the Player of the Match award, she added it was probably her best in a City shirt.
“I would say so,” she smiled. “Three assists… it’s a nice bonus!”
City are next in action at home on Sunday 1 April (2pm) as Reading visit the Academy Stadium in the FA WSL. Tickets for the Easter Sunday clash are available via tickets.mancity.com or at the Etihad Stadium Ticket Office.
