Houghton: We'll be all guns blazing

Steph Houghton asserts City have no intention of sitting back on our lead in the Champions League quarter-final second leg clash at Linkoping.

The Blues lead 2-0 from the home leg, courtesy of Nikita Parris and Jane Ross strikes, and – having avoided an away goal – stand a strong chance of progression to the semi-finals, where either Lyon or Barcelona await.

However, the skipper insists her side seek nothing less than a victory, eager to build another impressive winning-streak.

“Everybody’s raring to go,” Houghton told ManCity.com. “There definitely won’t be any complacency.

“We probably wanted one more goal in the home game but our performance on the day was very good.

“I still think we’ve got a lot more to give. In the Champions League, you can’t have complacency.

“From the first to the last minute, we’ll be all guns blazing and wanting to get a victory here as well.

“For the four years I’ve been here, we’ve never sat back and defended. It’s a City philosophy we really believe in. Everybody knows that – no matter who we play – we’re always going to play our way.

“We trust in the system we have here.

“We’ve arrived in Sweden excited and seen what the pitch is like – it’s a lovely pitch and stadium – and now, we can’t wait to kick-off.”

Houghton also spoke of her pride for the way her side have bounced back from a disappointing set of results.

“In the week before the Champions League, we had some unfortunate results in the Continental Tyres Cup Final and away at Birmingham,” she added.

“At this Club, it’s important we bounce back and we sure have done that with a great performance last Wednesday and a brilliant comeback in the FA Cup.

“I was rested for that game. Watching on Twitter, it was nail-biting at times! That’s what this Club’s about though: having character and courage, being brave and playing our way.

“It’s fantastic we’re through to the semi-finals. Credit to the girls.

“It’s important we use the squad to make sure everybody’s rested for big games – there are a lot of them coming up in the next few weeks.

“The next one is the most important one. We’ll focus on that and then we’ll look to Sunday’s game against Reading.

“For us, it’s about concentrating on ourselves and making sure we put in a performance on the day.”

Tickets for the Easter Sunday visit of Reading are available via tickets.mancity.com or at the Etihad Stadium Ticket Office.
